This article is part of Fermentation Friday where homebrewers around the world write on a common theme. The topic for this month: Matt over at A World of Brews wants to know “if and why you break away from the norm?”
“Let Your Freak Flag Fly” as our man Sam Calagione is so fond of saying.
I just checked and there are currently 23 recipes posted to this blog (some of them aren’t even for beer!) and I hope that nearly all of them are at least a little interesting and not too “normal”. Isn’t that kind of the point of homebrewing? If you wanted normal beer you’d be down at the corner store picking up a 48 pack of <insert fizzy yellow stuff here>.
But I do see the point about the 3 C’s (Cascade, Centennial, Columbus) showing up in lots of beers. You could probably add Amarillo and Simcoe to that list as well. I don’t use them that much since I don’t brew many beers that really call for them.
I usually brew whatever I happen to be in the mood for and most of the time a big hoppy monster is not it. They’re easy enough to find that’s it’s not worth the trouble.
But if you want to break out of a rut, why not try using some of those “boring” ingredients in a recipe that wouldn’t normally call for them. You never know what you might create. And that is why we homebrew.
