Brewing Recipe: Rye IPA

in Brewing Recipes

This recipe is largely based on what is probably the most popular Rye IPA recipe among brewers, Denny’s Rye IPA. I made a couple of minor adjustments to the base grains and some hop changes to customize it a bit. Due to the hop shortage, my local homebrew shop is limiting hops to 4 oz per batch, but at 63 IBUs it still comes in at the top of the range for an American IPA. Combined with some dry hopping, it should have plenty of big hop flavor. This was the first time I have brewed with rye malt and I had some trouble with a slow sparge. I think my braided hose in the mash tun was getting pinched under the weight of the grain, but the mash was quite sticky from the rye so that could have been the problem as well. You might want to add a half pound or so of rice hulls to the grain bill. If you haven’t used them before, rice hulls act as more of a mechanical device in the mash to help prevent clumping. They don’t add any flavor or additional sugars.

I still have another 4 days until it’s ready to be kegged, and then another 1-2 weeks after that until it reaches a proper level of carbonation. So, unfortunately I haven’t tasted the results yet, but here are the recipes anyway. The Rye malt needs to be mashed to convert, so I haven’t included an extract only recipe. If you’re still doing extract with steeping grains, you should definitely look into stepping up to a partial mash. You can likely do a simple mash with nothing extra other than a larger grain bag. There are a several good guides floating around the internet.
